2025 Ford F-150 Raptor Review

Overview

The Ford F-150 Raptor isn’t your typical pickup. While the regular F-150 models—including the capable F-150 Tremor—are already good at handling off-road terrain, the Raptor takes things to a whole new level. It’s built to fly over dunes, tackle rough trails, and even catch some air while doing it—all just as Ford planned.

A powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 450 horsepower powers the base Raptor. The 10-speed automatic transmission that comes with this engine allows for easy gear changes. What makes the Raptor special is its unique long-travel suspension, designed just for this model. It comes with optional Fox Dual Live Valve shocks and standard big 35-inch tires (you can also choose even bigger 37-inch tires). Even with all this off-road hardware, the Raptor still gives you a surprisingly comfortable ride on regular roads, though you might notice a bit of body roll when turning.

If you want even more power, the Raptor R is the beast you’re looking for. It replaces the V6 with a supercharged V8 that puts out an incredible 720 horsepower. It also comes standard with 37-inch tires and increases towing capacity from 8200 pounds to 8700 pounds.

Both versions of the Raptor are thrilling to drive, especially off-road. Their performance makes it hard not to smile, no matter where you’re driving. And with a new competitor coming soon—the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO, which follows the legendary Ram 1500 TRX—the Raptor R is about to get some fun competition.

With its mix of power, comfort, and off-road ability, the Ford F-150 Raptor continues to be one of the top choices in its class. That’s why it has earned a well-deserved spot on the 2025 Editors’ Choice list.

What’s New in the 2025 Ford F-150 Raptor?

Not much has changed for 2025. The Raptor already got several updates in 2024, including a new look, better front tow hooks, improved headlights, and an advanced suspension system with available Fox Dual Live Valve shocks. So for 2025, the truck mostly stays the same, just continuing what worked well last year.

Price and Which One to Choose

The 2025 Ford F-150 Raptor starts at around $81,000, while the high-performance version, the Raptor R, starts at $112,725. The final price depends on the extra features and packages you choose.

Here are the two main versions:

  • Raptor (V6 twin-turbo $81,000)
  • Raptor R (V8 from $112,725

Both models come only in the crew cab version (Ford calls it “SuperCrew”), which means four full doors and plenty of space inside.

Choosing between the two versions depends on what you want. The Raptor R costs about 40% more than the regular Raptor, but it also gives you 55% more horsepower, thanks to its powerful V8 engine. If you love fast acceleration and top-tier performance, the Raptor R is the better pick.

Additional unique features that follow the Raptor R include its graphics, branding, and optional carbon fiber trim. And of course, the deep, aggressive sound of the supercharged V8 engine makes it even more exciting to drive.

Engine, Transmission & Performance (Made Easy)

450 horsepower is produced by a powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine under the covers of the 2025 Ford F-150 Raptor. It sounds great too, thanks to a 3.0-inch exhaust system, which gives the truck a deep, sporty growl. However, if you compare it to the V8 engine in the Raptor R, the V6 is still quieter and less aggressive.

Four-wheel drive is standard on its V6 engine, which is linked to a seamless 10-speed automatic transmission. That means all four wheels get power, helping it tackle off-road trails with ease.

If you want even more power, go for the Raptor R. It comes with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, the same one found in the Shelby GT500 sports car. This monster engine delivers 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque, making the Raptor R one of the most powerful trucks on the market.

The Raptor offers strong off-road features like

  • Tough 17-inch wheels
  • Standard 35-inch tires
  • 37-inch BFGoodrich All-terrain tires are an option (the Raptor R comes with them standard).

37-inch BFGoodrich. Although they are standard on the Raptor R, all-terrain tires are an option.

The 37-inch tires give the truck better ground clearance and help it handle steep climbs, sharp angles, and rough terrain more easily. With these tires, the Raptor R has significant off-road capability because it is 13 inches above the ground.

Each Raptor model has a powerful suspension system with a five-link rear coil-spring arrangement and Fox internal-bypass shock absorbers. Trucks with the 37-inch tires also get Fox Dual Live Valve shocks, which can adjust automatically for a smoother and smarter ride. These shocks make sure the truck stays comfortable, whether you’re cruising on the highway or bouncing through dirt trails.

We tested the updated Raptor off-road and were truly impressed. It handled rough ground easily, kept its grip, and offered a smooth ride, even on very bumpy surfaces.

Speed Test (0 to 60 mph)

  • The regular V6 Raptor goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, which is fast for a big off-road truck.
  • The more powerful Raptor R is even quicker, doing 0 to 60 mph in only 3.6 seconds—that’s sports car territory!

Towing and Payload Capacity (Made Easy)

The 2025 Ford F-150 Raptor R can tow up to 8,700 pounds, while the standard Raptor version can tow up to 8,200 pounds. Both models can carry a payload of up to 1,400 pounds in the truck bed.

While this might seem like a lot, it’s less than what regular F-150 models can tow. For example:

  • A regular F-150 with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 (400 horsepower) can pull up to 14,000 pounds.
  • The 5.0-liter V8 variant can drive up to 13,000 pounds.
  • The hybrid F-150 can handle up to 12,700 pounds.
  • Additionally, they can carry between 1,840 and 3,250 pounds.

So yes, the Raptor gives up some towing strength, but it trades that for amazing off-road ability, powerful suspension, and aggressive looks. Regular F-150s might haul more, but they don’t look or perform like the Raptor in the wild.

Fuel Economy (MPG)—What to Expect

The EPA estimates the Raptor with the V6 engine gets around

  • 14 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city
  • 18 mpg on the highway

The more powerful Raptor R with the V8 engine uses more fuel, giving

  • 10 mpg in the city
  • 15 mpg on the highway

In a real-world test on the highway at 75 mph, the Raptor R with 37-inch tires got around 15 mpg, which is about what you’d expect from a high-performance, off-road truck.

All Raptor models come with a large 36-gallon fuel tank, so even though the fuel economy isn’t great, you’ll still get a decent range before needing to fill up.

Interior, Comfort & Cargo (Simplified)

Inside the Raptor, you’ll find the same roomy and practical cabin as the regular F-150 SuperCrew. But the Raptor adds some sporty touches to match its wild performance.

Here’s what makes the Raptor’s interior stand out:

  • A 12-inch digital display in the dashboard comes standard.
  • You get more storage space and nicer-quality materials throughout the cabin.
  • The Raptor symbol is laser-etched on the top center of the steering wheel, which has an orange racing stripe that suggests a race vehicle.
  • There are big aluminum paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for manual gear control.

You also have options to upgrade the cabin:

  • Choose carbon-fiber accents for a sportier look.
  • Add Recaro sport seats with extra side support if you want a more aggressive, race-inspired feel.

Infotainment & Connectivity (Made Simple)

A large 12-inch touchscreen is installed in the middle of the dashboard of the 2025 Ford F-150 Raptor R. It uses Ford’s SYNC 4 system, which lets you:

  • Use Amazon Alexa
  • Get software updates over the air
  • You can use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to wirelessly connect your phone

Ford also included physical knobs for volume and tuning, which makes it easier to use while driving.

You can upgrade to a powerful 18-speaker B&O (Bang & Olufsen) sound system if you love great sound.

Want to use power tools on the go? You can add a 2.0-kilowatt generator in the truck bed to run equipment, perfect for worksites or camping.

Safety & Driver Assistance (Made Easy)

The Raptor has the same safety tech as a regular F-150, but with extra help for off-roading, too. It even earned a 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA.

Some helpful safety features include

  • Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist

Off-road help includes:

  • Trail Control: Like cruise control, but for off-road.
  • Trail 1-Pedal Drive: Ideal for difficult terrain, this system allows you to accelerate and brake with a single pedal.

For crash test details, you can check the NHTSA or IIHS websites.

Warranty & Maintenance Coverage

Here’s what Ford offers with the Raptor R:

  • 3 years or 36,000 miles: Basic warranty
  • 5 years or 60,000 miles: Powertrain warranty
  • 5 years or 60,000 miles: Roadside assistance

Unlike some other brands like Chevy or Toyota, Ford does not include free scheduled maintenance.
