An electric motor and a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine form the core of the XM. Together, they deliver 644 horsepower in the standard model and a whopping 738 horsepower in the XM Label trim.
This SUV can hit 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, which is incredibly fast for something this large. It’s not quite as quick as a Lamborghini Urus or Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, but it’s very close. The XM uses an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive to keep all that power under control.
Electric Driving and Battery Life
Even though it’s a high-performance machine, the XM can drive around 30 miles on electric power alone. In our test, we got 29 miles before the battery ran out. The 25.7-kWh battery can be recharged in just over three hours with a 7.4-kW onboard charger.
This means you can do short commutes or errands without using gas, making the XM more practical than you’d expect from a performance SUV.
Fuel Economy
The XM doesn’t sip fuel like a compact car, but it does better than many of its rivals thanks to the hybrid setup. The EPA rates it at 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. On our highway test, it managed 20 mpg using just gas.
With the electric range factored in, the XM returned a combined 49 MPGe, which is solid for a vehicle with this kind of size and performance.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Step inside, and the XM instantly feels premium. High-quality leather, plush materials, and bold design make the interior stand out. There’s no third-row seating, but the two rows you get are spacious and supportive. Even the fluffy throw pillows for the backseat passengers are a fun yet comfortable addition.
BMW offers an optional faux-suede headliner with fiber-optic lights, which produces a stylish, geometric design in place of a panoramic sunroof. For an even richer experience, you can upgrade to the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, which features light-up speakers.
